SRCC Student Slaps Professor Over Low Marks in Internals

in 2017/Colleges/Courses/News by

Ashwani Kumar, an assistant professor at SRCC’s global business operations in Delhi University, was attacked by his student of management discipline who resorted to kicking the professor’s car and slapping him multiple times over being awarded low marks in his internal examination. The professor has left the city and gone to Haryana following the incident.

“The student – who fought with Ashwani and slapped him – holds a record of irregularity in academics. The incident took place in the parking area and in the presence of the college principal R P Rustagi,” said professor Alok Kumar, calling it a heinous crime.

According to a report in The Indian Express, “While the principal of the college, R P Rustagi, said he was given zero because he never attended classes, the student, Pradeep Phogat, has alleged that he was being discriminated against because he was “politically active” and was from the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP).
ABVP state secretary Bharat Khatana, however, maintained that Phogat did not belong to the organisation.

Confirming that an FIR has been lodged under IPC sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 341(wrongful restraint) and 506 (criminal intimidation) against the student, DCP (north district) Jatin Narwal said further investigation is underway.

Phogat is currently pursuing a Post Graduate Diploma in Global Business Operations (GBO) from SRCC. He was the Union Sports Secretary of Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) in 2015, and has previously done his LLB from Delhi University’s Law Faculty.

“How will we inculcate discipline on the college premises if teachers are attacked for nothing but performing their duty?” wondered Alok, who is an assistant professor in the commerce department. SRCC’s officiating principal and professor Ashwani Kumar did not answer to Mail Today’s calls.

The professor had however lodged an FIR against the student at Maurice Nagar police station immediately after the incident, on Friday evening. According to police officials, an FIR under Section 341 and 506 has been lodged against the student for wrongful restraint and criminal intimidation by the professor.

“We have registered an FIR on Friday against a student from SRCC’s management programme, based on the complaint of the professor, who was accompanied by the principal. The reports of beating are false, as the FIR filed by the professor does not mention it,” said Jatin Narwal, SHO at university’s Maurice Nagar police station.

India’s renowned destination for commerce programme, SRCC, had reported a similar incident of violence against a college faculty member last year. Vineet Kumar, another ad-hoc professor from the college was assaulted last year over the use of swimming pool facility. According to the college administration, the facility is not extended for personal use, as demanded by the student, and is against the rules and regulations.
