Bail granted to JNU professor, arrested in sexual harassment case

City Court granted JNU Life Science Professor Atul Johri bail accused of sexual harassment this Tuesday.

The past week witnessed innumerable protests staged by students, professors and women’s rights organizations demanding Johri’s arrest. After three hours of questioning at Vasant Kunj Police station, Johri was arrested and produced before duty magistrate Ritu Singh.

Johri had pled for bail, saying that sending him to jail would ruin his career. As Johri holds many administrative positions in JNU, the complainants had expressed fear of intimidation to the Delhi Police who had thereafter opposed this plea. The court however after hearing both sides granted Johri bail and told him to furnish a bond of 30,000 rs for each of the eight FIRs registered against him. The bail was granted on the conditions that he should not intimidate the complainants or hamper the investigation in any way.

On Monday, demands for separate registration of FIRs for all eight sexual harassment cases were made by fifty-four JNU professors. At night, 7 FIRS were registered against Johri in addition to the one previously registered against him. The police stated that in each case, the statements of the complainants were recorded before the court.

Women’s rights organizations like the All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) and the All India Mahila Sanskritik Sangathan protested outside the police station yesterday demanding Johri’s arrest. Just the day before JNU students had demonstrated at the police station regarding the same as well.
