Uncertainty looms over DU as colleges struggle to pay salaries

In July 2017, the Delhi government announced that it would withhold funds for 28 colleges as they had not formed governing bodies.  While 16 partially funded colleges have adequate funds as they receive grants from the University Grants Commission, 12 colleges struggled to manage after September. These institutions turned to surplus funds to pay salaries to their staff.

Education minister Manish Sisodia’s advisor Atishi Marlena, said the government sanctioned the release of funds on Monday as promised to DU Teachers’ Association as an interim relief. The colleges though, are still grappling with the question of paying their staff for the month of November even as faculty has already been put through trying times as their salary for October was released earlier this week only.

Meanwhile, the harrowed professors consider this to be one of the many tussles between the state and the centre. They’ve called for the state and centre governments to not let their animosity get in the way of students’ education. In what could be called a step in that direction, the dean of colleges of Delhi University met deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia on Wednesday to resolve the ongoing troubles between DU and Delhi government. “We discussed steps for resolving the long-pending issue of governing bodies. The process will be fast-tracked and the government will soon see the formation of governing bodies in colleges of DU,” Sinha told Mail Today.

One can only hope for a speedy resolution to prevent such issues in getting in the way of the varsity’s functioning.
