Delhi University, which presently offers 54,000 seats in over 60 colleges, will add 2,000 undergraduate seats in various courses from the upcoming academic session.
This year, 19 colleges will begin courses that were approved by the academic and executive council last year. These 19 colleges have received the requisite proposal to start 35 new courses from this year. The new courses will be introduced in certain colleges and 2,000 UG seats will be added thereafter. DU has also decided to add 32 seats to science courses and 40 seats to arts courses.
“The last time additional seats were added in DU was in 2007-08… since then, even though the number of applicants have steadily increased, additional seats haven’t been added. We met the vice-chancellor and asked him to issue a notification regarding courses that have already been approved, and to conduct a meeting of the councils as soon as possible so that more courses can be added,” said A K Bhagi, member of DU’s Executive Council.
The courses introduced in various colleges include:
1. Political science Honours at St. Stephen’s College
2. Mathematics Honours in Gargi College and Delhi College of Arts and Commerce
3. Sociology Honours in Indraprastha College for Women
4. B.Sc. Forensic Science in SGTB Khalsa College and Computer Science, History, Psychology and Mathematics Honours in Aryabhatta College
Bharati College, Ramanujan College and Daulat Ram College will also introduce certain courses soon.
