We all know Tanmay Bhat of All India Bakchod (AIB) fame and recently he seems to have become social media’s centre of attraction. With a rant about feminism that got him a lot of appreciation earlier this month, the stand-up comedian’s latest gag has made him national news (and not in a good way).
On the 26th of May, Bhat posted a series of videos on Snapchat, impersonating Sachin Tendulkar and Lata Mangeshkar by employing the face-swap feature of the app. This was not the first time that he posted such a video but this one gained immense popularity when Bhat posted it on Facebook.
The video went viral and received attention from celebrities such as Anupam Kher and Riteish Deshmukh on Twitter, who expressed their disapproval of what Tanmay Bhat did in the name of comedy.
The snapstory was christened “Sachin vs Lata Civil War”, where the two legends are seen arguing and dissing each other. “Distasteful”, “disrespectful”, “shameful” – are a few of the many negative words floating about on everyone’s news channels and social media feeds, with regard to the video.
The controversy has reached such adverse levels that political party, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) talked about filing an FIR against the comedian and people were seen burning his effigy. Also, Ameya Kopekar (MNS party leader) threatened to beat up Bhat if he saw him in public and wants the video to be taken down.
A Snapchat story became the subject of a Newshour Debate on national television channel, Times Now. The hate being spewed about Bhat has even led to the creation of an android game called Tanmay Crush which follows a Flappy-Bird-like format.
While Tanmay Bhat is being condemned for allegedly abusing freedom of speech, the people reacting to it are not being polite either. Questions are being asked about the rampant intolerance and hypocrisy in India, once again.
