It’s that time of the year again when there is a slight chill in the air which you didn’t notice creep in till the sudden goose bumps on your arm force you to acknowledge it. The quiet chill brings with itself a not so quiet festival season, hail Dusshera, hail Diwali, hail patakhe. There are a few symbolic things without which it doesn’t seem like Diwali be it meethai, crackers, rangoli or even Cadbury’s “kuch meetha ho jay” Diwali advertisement. Or things your mom says, every year on this day, the insignia of the festival.
So, in the spirit of this festive season, we bring to you 8 things moms say on Diwali.
1).”Aaj toh time pe uthja, Diwali hai.”
Every Diwali wakeup call ever.
2). “Rangoli banai hai udhar. Door raho”
Even when you are fifty feet away from the damn rangoli.
3). “Yeh vaala gift nahin kholna. Aage dena hai.”
Why??? We never get to keep the cool gifts!
4). “Aaj toh acche kapde pehen le.”
Because you dress like a homeless person otherwise, right?
5). “Chintu ko bula, light dobara kharab ho gai hai.”
The generic trouble with all those fancy, jazzy, glinty Chinese Diwali lights.
6). “Diyon main tel daal”
This reiterates throughout the evening till everyone is too busy with crackers to care.
7). “Patakhon ko abhi haath nahin lagana. Pooja ke liye baitho pehele.”
And this time, we actually do listen. So religious, much Diwali.
8). “Khaa-pi ke farik ho jao, phir patakhe.”
Pehele khaana. Always.
Moms make celebrations most special. I hope, dear reader, you can relate to all, or at least some, of these. Comment below if you have anything more to add to this list. Wish you a fun and safe Diwali. Have a ‘blast’.
