A Delhi-based journalist, Sadiq Naqvi, the friend of JNU student Umar Khalid was questioned yesterday for about six hours by the Delhi Police Special Branch at Vasant Kunj Police Station. Umar, accussed of raising anti-national slogans and having a sedition case lodged against him, is on the run, and the Police are trying to trace his whereabouts.
Naqvi and Khalid both attended Kirori Mal College of Delhi University and were friends in college; Naqvi was Khalid’s junior by a year. Umar had spoken to the journalist after the stir, and the latter was questioned extensively regarding the same.
According to a police source (as reported by The Hindu),
He was asked about Umar’s whereabouts, something Sadiq replied that he was not aware of. He did accept that he had spoken to Umar some ten days ago and has not been in touch ever since.”
He was also quizzed about the history between the two, and whether Naqvi himself has been involved in the event commemorating Afzal Guru’s hanging.
It was alleged that Naqvi was not being cooperative, but sources close to him snubbed these rumours, and falsified them.
Naqvi has been asked to visit the police station again on Sunday at the Special task force office in Vasant Kunj. Sources have also reported that Naqvi will be unavailable for comments till the enquiry is over.
