Kumar Mangalam Birla, chairman of the Aditya Birla group, one of the largest conglomerate corporations in India, has been appointed as the new chairman of Board of Governors at the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIM-A), according to highly placed sources.
Sources said appointment of an IIM chairman follows three processes including invitation to the candidate by MHRD, acceptance by the candidate and a final appointment. Birla too has received the notification and accepted the appointment, it has been learnt. His name was finalised from among a shortlist of three names, Infosys chairman R Seshasayee and HDFC chairmn Deepak Parekh the other two. The names were shortlisted by a search committee set up by IIM-A’s Board of Governors.
In May this year, union minister Prakash Javadekar’s predecessor Smriti Irani had rejected the previous shortlist comprising Parekh, Seshasayee and Hero MotoCorp CMD Pawan Munjal, following which the search committee headed by interim IIM-A chairman Pankaj Patel sent a revised list which included Birla’s name.
